Arthur Lydiard

I started running at the age of 12 after joining a group of runners coached by Arthur Lydiard in my hometown of Beachlands, Auckland. Arthur has been, and continues to be, the greatest influence on my running career. While I enjoyed some success as a junior, it was not until my mid-twenties that I really started focusing on my running.

Caption: Winning the Auckland Half Marathon in 2006.

Throughout 2000 and 2001 I had been steadily increasing the volume of training. In 2002 I won the Auckland Half Marathon.

The next year I represented New Zealand at the World Cross Country in Lausanne, Switzerland and later in the year in my second attempt at the distance, I won the Auckland Marathon.

The 2004 London Marathon was an unforgettable experience for me. Running with a large group of Europeans chasing Olympic spots I finished 22nd in 2hours 17.40 - almost 12 minutes faster than my personal best at that time.

Kenya

In preparation for the 2005 London Marathon I trained for three months in Kenya’s Rift Valley staying in a camp with Luke Kibet who went on to the win the marathon at the 2007 World Athletics Championships. I learnt a great deal about distance running during this period. With an abundance of training partners, endless training paths and high altitude, I was in the best form of my life when I left Kenya in March 2005. I returned to Kenya in 2009 and 2015.

World Athletics Championships

I came 18th in the 2005 London Marathon and later that year I placed 28th in the marathon at the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki.

Returning to New Zealand I won the Rotorua Marathon in 2006 as well as national road and track titles. I ran the Hamburg Marathon in 2008 improving my personal best to 2hours16.31.

Winning the Lydiard Marathon later in 2008 meant a great deal to me and was consolation for missing out on a qualifying time for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

In early 2009 I spent three months in Kenya living and training with 2007 Marathon World Champion Luke Kibet’s training group.  After returning, I won the Rotorua Marathon for second time in the closest finish in the history of the event beating Steven O’Callahan by just 6 seconds.

I now live in Birkenhead on Auckland's North Shore.
